Interview with Southeast Soccer Board Member Keith Baudin

March 7, 2016

1. You are a Southeast Soccer (SES) board member. How long have you been on the board and with SES?

Two whole months!

2. What motivates you to be a part of youth soccer and what are your goals as a board member?

I played and rediscovered the game when my son was born - watching Premiere League match replays and "Bend It Like Beckham" in the middle of the night. Both my kids really gravitated to the game as well which energized me. That energy had to go somewhere and the Board felt like the right level of involvement.

I appreciate the community nature of SES. We've met great people and really enjoyed watching our kids and their teams grow and improve.

I believe the organization can grow. We've lived in Longfellow since 1999 and seen schools grow and reopen. We've seen families come and go out to the suburbs and return. We want there to be great reasons to live in the neighborhood and SES can be one of those.

That's my goal for board membership - to see a self-sustaining, thriving organization in which the community is invested. I want a safe place for every kid who wants to play, to be able to do so at their desired level of competitiveness and demonstrated level of commitment.

3. How would your fellow board members describe you?

A good listener and synthesizer; eager to learn and be involved; other than that, I'll give them more time to get to know me!

4. What is you favorite SES memory or experience?

I just love watching my kids practice and play. They have a blast!

5. What should parents know about traveling soccer before they commit their children and families?

Time is probably the challenge of which to be aware. Our teams play with an eastern orientation meaning there can be late afternoon, weeknight games to get to in places like Red Wing, New Richmond, Mahtomedi (but also closer like St Paul and Woodbury).

The good news is I've yet to see a player who could not get a ride with a teammate. We all live so close together, and good relationships spring up so quickly, that families never lack for an assist.

I think they should also know that teams are pretty self-governing entities in SES. Parents time and volunteer effort can make each season, game and practice more rewarding for our players; whether that be volunteering to coach, manage, line fields or just help out - that is the spirit of SES.
